Saline breast implants, silicon breast implants
Breast augmentation is a hot topic discussed amongst many women of today’s society. And where breast augmentation is concerned, there will surely be word about breast implants. A breast implant is actually a sac of material that is known as elastomer. This sac is filled with either saline or silicone. The sacs are then surgically implanted right under the woman’s breast tissue. But which implant is best for you?
Saline solution is comprised of sodium chloride mixed with sterile water. This breast implant actually comes with a silicone cover or shell that contains sterile saline. The size of the implant would depend on the desired size of the patient.
Silicone, on the other hand, comes from the semi-metallic element known as silicon. The element is then combined with oxygen, producing silica. When silica is heated with carbon at a very high temperature, silicon is then produced. Further processing is then employed to convert silicon to the polymer known as silicone. This substance is actually rubbery or gel-like in appearance.
When choosing between these two materials, it is important to consult your surgeon, so that both of you can discuss the pros and cons presented by each material. Here are the general advantages and disadvantages of both saline and silicone implants.
Firstly, saline breast implants are surgically inserted empty. Thus, a smaller incision would be made. Secondly, should the saline implant rupture, it is immediately noticeable. The shell automatically deflates because the salt-water solution contained in the implants would pour out. This option is also less expensive than silicone implants, and is readily available to women who are just 18 years old and above. However, saline water is not that consistent, causing the implant shell to fold very easily when pressed against saline.
Silicone breast implants, however, give your breasts a softer and more natural feel. Visible rippling is also at a minimum, so there are virtually no visible folds through your skin, should the implant shell fold at certain times. These implants are known to last longer than saline implants as well. You can also choose to have either round shaped or tear drop shaped silicone breast implants, if you are already 22 years old, or older. But then again, silicone implants are pre-filled, so incision sites would be larger. Should the implant rupture, the effects are not noticeable and silicone leaks might be absorbed by your body tissues.
